[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great bag. Perfect for day trip or even longer trips. Backpack feature also handy when carrying other bags.
Do not buy this .wheels defected after just one trip … virtually not usable. Also very disappointed in Tumi’s “warranty plan” — checked status on my repair order & stated that it is “out of warranty” — I just purchased this in March 2026, and used for one domestic trip. Very disappointed in this brand and will not buy again.
Outstanding quality of materials. And the soft sided form factor makes this much lighter ( 4lbs) then my aluminum tumi. Its larger single compartment is much easier to pack compared to a clam shell. This is about the largest capacity you can get in a carry on size that fits almost all airlines. And the tan color is very sharp.
This is my favorite backpack to carry-on. It will be too big for any budget airline. I had no issue internationally and was able to carry it on smoothly to Air France and Finnair. There was a flight that they made everyone stow the bags and check them at the gate. I was a little scared it wouldn’t hold up since it’s a softer material and not hard enough to be smashed by bigger bags. When I got my bag back, everything was fine and it only had one stain that I rubbed off. As long as you pack that thing good, and not with breakables inside, it will hold up well in checked luggage. Loved the convenience of only one opening flap. I felt like I fits so much more when it opens like that. It had so many spots to tuck things into so can carry a ton of clothes and souvenirs surprisingly. It was super easy to wear as a backpack and also to wheel around. It is very convenient to have both options when taking ferries, trains and planes. I liked the price too! I got it on sale so felt like I got my moneys worth. You can get your initials on it and lock it easily. Yes to this bag! I’m also going to use it as my weekender from now on.
Naturally the materials are top notch and the attention to form and function does not disappoint. My reason for return is the bag itself is rather thin and flimsy? The top and surrounding walls that make the structure doesn't allow the bag to stand with anything on top of it without a crater dip... Sadly, I wouldn't attempt to check this luggage to the wilds of luggage land. Baby infant - I won't let you go alone to get thrashed! Alas, long lasting relationships shouldn't be so one sided. Odddly - when it is somewhat full - The bag falls forward as well..
Not impressed! I own other TUMI products, however, this one did not cut the “mustard”for the price!
I really like it! The only downside is when I wear it as a backpack and try to use both arm traps. The wheels are poking me in my back. It is ok using one arm trap.
This is the best bag in its size class of international carry on backpack duffels in terms of fitting as much as possible. I've purchased both a Samsonite and Osprey model of similar size to compare. The handle could be more stable when extended and the wheels are sufficient. fwiw, my other entry level Tumi bags have similar handle feel. Both the Osprey 40L Sojourn and Samsonite models have more stable handles/wheels yet, the handle mechanisms seem to take about 20% of their packing space. The Osprey model has a better backpack feature than the Tumi bag however, the Tumi's is functional enough and better than it's Samsonite brethren. Finally, the Tumi bag has hardly any compartments however, those are given up for volume. Compartments in the Samsonite bag are really hard to use when the duffel is full. The Osprey is slightly better but, also limited. I picked this bag because its functional and stylish. If I packed lighter, the Osprey would be. the most functional but, packing less isn't an option.
Problem = the rear side sleeve that it uses to cradle it to the other Tumi roller does not allow the other Tumi roller handle to telescope all the way up. The Duffel Backpack is sewn at the top. I had to pay a tailor to cut it for me, and then the tailor could not sew it because there was no room. So, now the bag is cut at the top, the material is frayed, and there is very little tolerance / room for my hand to get around the other Tumi roller handle that is meant to proudly pop out. Bad planning.
